Assorted stuff from the junk drawer in my head

No specific topic, just some things that came to mind recently I found interesting but not worth a whole blog post on.

1) Wish I knew the story behind this….

2) Did anyone else find out this Christmas that they make 5 pound gummy bears?  Takes me back to the original Charlie and the Chocolate Factory when they enter the chocolate room and there were giant gummy bears hanging from one of the trees – yep, that useless piece of trivia is taking up real estate in my head.

3) And finally, my favorite quote from Pirates of the Caribbean?

barbossa

That would be Captain Barbossa saying “Yer off the edge of the map, mate! Here, there be monsters!”

I was always intrigued by that line.  Quick check with wikipedia reveals that line “there be monsters” or its related saying “here be dragons” actually comes from ancient maps where the Latin phrase “hic sunt dracones” was placed on maps to denote dangerous or unexplored territories, this tradition continued in the medieval days of putting sea serpents and other mythological creatures in uncharted areas of maps as you can see in the below picture along the bottom border

G’night – got some reading to finish up.
